Everything converts through the kilogram. The pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, and every other imperial weight is defined from it: sixteen ounces to the pound, fourteen pounds to the stone.

There are two tons, and they differ by 10%. The US short ton is 2,000 pounds — about 907 kg. The UK long ton is 2,240 pounds — about 1,016 kg. Neither is the metric tonne of exactly 1,000 kg, which sits between them. All three are listed separately here, because a shipping quote in “tons” that assumes the wrong one is out by roughly a tenth.

The stone is worth a note for anyone reading British sources. It is fourteen pounds, and British weights are conventionally written as stones and pounds — “11 stone 4” rather than 11.29 stone. The tool gives you the decimal; the pounds remainder is the fractional part times fourteen.

Strictly these are units of mass rather than weight. The distinction matters in physics and not at all in a shipping label, which is why every practical converter, including this one, treats them as the same question.

You are checking in for a flight with a 23 kg baggage allowance, and your bathroom scale reads in pounds. It shows 48.5 lb.

Type 48.5, choose pounds, and read 21.999 kg. You are a kilogram under — no repacking required. Note how close that is: the common shortcut of “divide by 2.2” gives 22.05 kg, which happens to be fine here but would mislead you at the margin.

Now the ton trap. A supplier quotes shipping for “2 tons” of material. Type 2, choose US ton: 1,814 kg. Choose UK long ton instead: 2,032 kg. Choose metric tonne: 2,000 kg. Those are three genuinely different quantities from the same word, and the spread is over 200 kg.

The practical rule: if the quote comes from the United States it is almost certainly short tons; from the UK, historically long tons but increasingly metric; from anywhere else, metric tonnes. If it matters, ask rather than assume.
